FIRE, FROM GENERATION TO GENERATION
Every new move of God, every revival, builds on the faith, the passion, the sacrifices, and the prayers of the generations before us. Many years ago, when I began to see massive harvests of souls in Africa and in Asia, the Lord spoke to me and showed me the following Scripture:
"I sent you to reap what you have not worked for; others have done the hard work, and now you have taken up their labor.” John 4:38
It was humbling, because I was one of those young men who used to think that I had a powerful "thing" from God while those of the older generation were "religious" and did not really understand this new "thing" or "move of God."
This verse of Scripture changed my thinking. I began to see that my team and I were reaping a harvest where others had sowed in tears and paid the price. I was physically in places where men like William Carey and David Livingstone had preached over 150 or 200 years ago. They had labored and sowed the precious seed of the Gospel.
I was reaping the harvest from the seed that they had sown with so many tears.
I think of the men of God whose teaching and input into my life over the decades have made me who I am today. I am thankful that people like me get to stand on the shoulders of giants, and that because of them we can see and go farther into the harvest fields than they ever did. I know that I would be nobody without them, and that they are among the great "cloud of witnesses," cheering us on.
Most of all, I thank God for the unbroken chain of Pentecost. Jesus poured out the Holy Spirit into the upper uoom 2000 years ago. Since that day, the fire of Pentecost, the blood-stained Gospel, the gifts and the power of the Holy Spirit have been passed down from generation to generation. These are the greatest treasures of the church, and they are in our hands today to pass on to the next generation.
My fellow preachers, let us value these priceless treasures. Let us preach it, live it, demonstrate it. I look back at my last 48 years in the Lord's service: the passion for Jesus, the power of the Holy Spirit, the millions who have come to Jesus, the dead raised, those with paralysis walking, the blind seeing. All these things were passed down to me by those who walked before me. Now it is time for us to pass these things on to those who are coming after us.
We have to transfer that passion, the power of Jesus, and the Gospel that carries and propels us to the next generation. Let them stand on our shoulders and see greater things than we ever did.
